✓ Straight knitting needles 5 mm | US 8.
✓ Sewing tapestry needle.
Gauge (Tension)
In Stockinette stitch:
10 cm | 4″ = 21 stitches, 27 rows.
Instructions
Edge stitches: knit the first stitch of the row, purl the last stitch of the row.
Work in pattern (as established) means that you will work as previously stated, without changing the position of the pattern.
RS – right side.
WS – wrong side.
1×1 ribbing: knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. Repeat to the end of the row.
Stitch no.2:
- Row 1 (RS): knit 3 stitches, purl 2 stitches, make a “knot” (purl 3 stitches together not slipping of the needle, yarn over, purl 3 stitches together), purl 2 stitches. Repeat to the end of the row.
- Rows 2, 4 (WS): knit 2 stitches, purl 3 stitches. Repeat to the end of the row.
- Row 3 (RS): make a “knot”, purl 2 stitches, knit 3 stitches, purl 2 stitches. Repeat to the end of the row.
Hat
Cast on 122 stitches, using the long tail cast on technique (leave the tail about 120 cm | 50″ long).
Work 34 rows in 1×1 ribbing (approx. 13 cm | 5″).
Next row (RS): knit the edge stitch, * knit 3 stitches, purl 2 stitches *, repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left, purl the edge stitch.
Next row (WS): work in pattern (knit the knits and purl the purls).
Work 36 rows in Stitch no.2.
Decreases:
Row 1 (RS): knit the edge stitch, * knit 3 stitches together, purl 2 stitches, knit 3 stitches, purl 2 stitches *, repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left, purl the edge stitch.
Row 2 and every following WS row: work in pattern (knit the knits and purl the purls).
Row 3 (RS): knit the edge stitch, * knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches, knit 3 stitches together, purl 2 stitches *, repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left, purl the edge stitch.
Row 5 (RS): knit the edge stitch, * knit 2 stitches together, purl 1 stitch *, repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left, purl the edge stitch.
Row 6 (WS): knit the edge stitch, * knit 2 stitches together *, repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left, purl the edge stitch.
Cut the yarn. Close up the top of the hat: using the sewing needle thread the yarn through remaining stitches. Pull the yarn.
With the wrong side facing, sew up the hat using the vertical seam until the end of the ribbing.
Turn the hat to the right side and continue seaming.
Weave in the loose ends.
