Sunny socks

knitting pattern

The Sunny socks are worked in the round from the cuff to the toe. The heel is shaped with short rows. In the end the toe is sewn with the Kitchener stitch.

Sizes

Foot length:

22.5 cm [8.8″] – EU-35, US-4, UK-2.

23 cm [9.06″] – EU-36, US-5, UK-3.

23.5 cm [9.25″] – EU-37, US-6, UK-4.

24 cm [9.45″] – EU-38, US-7, UK-5.

24.5 cm [9.65″] – EU-39, US-8, UK-6.

25 cm [9.84″] – EU-40, US-9, UK-7.

Materials and tools

Yarn: Nako SUPERLAMBS SPECIAL. 50% acrylic, 50% wool. 100 g [3.5 oz] = 200 m [218 yds]. 1 skein.

Circular or double pointed knitting needles 3.5 mm [US 4].

Gauge (Tension)

In Stockinette stitch:

10 cm [4”] = 21 stitches, 30 rows.

Instructions

Work in pattern (as established) means that you will work as previously stated, without changing the position of the pattern.

BOR – beginning of the round.

K – knit.

K2togL – knit 2 stitches together left leaning.

K2togR – knit 2 stitches together right leaning.

P – purl.

SM – slip the marker.

RS – right side.

WS wrong side.

1×1 ribbing: K1, P1. Repeat to the end of the round.

Socks (follow the instructions twice)

You can work with double pointed needles or with the circular needles using the magic loop method.

Cast on 48 stitches using the long tail cast on technique.

If you work with double pointed needles distribute your stitches so you have 12 stitches on each needle.

If you work with the magic loop method distribute your stitches so you have 24 stitches on both of your needles.

Join for working in the round and place the BOR marker.

Work 6 rounds in 1×1 ribbing. 2 cm [¾”]

Next 14 rounds: SM, * K1, P2, K1, repeat from * to the end of the round.

Shape the heel:

You will use the wrap and turn technique.

Row 1 (RS): work 24 stitches in pattern, K23, slip next stitch with yarn in back and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Row 2 (WS): slip the wrapped stitch, P22, slip next stitch with yarn in front and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Row 3 (RS): slip the wrapped stitch, K until you have 1 stitch before the wrap, slip next stitch with yarn in back and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Row 4 (WS): slip the wrapped stitch, P until you have 1 stitch before the wrap, slip next stitch with yarn in front and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Repeat rows 3-4 up you have 8 stitches between the wraps, ending on a WS row. That will be 16 rows.

Row 17 (RS): slip the wrapped stitch, K8, (K the wrapped stitch together with the wrap) repeat 7 more times, slip the BOR marker, work 24 stitches in pattern, (K the wrapped stitch together with the wrap) repeat 7 more times, K8, slip next stitch with yarn in back and wrap the working yarn around it, rurn the work.

Row 18 (WS): slip the wrapped stitch, P8, slip next stitch with yarn in front and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Row 19 (RS): slip the wrapped stitch, K to the wrap, K the wrapped stitch together with the wrap, slip next stitch with yarn in back and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Row 20 (WS): slip the wrapped stitch, P to the wrap, P the wrapped stitch together with the wrap, slip next stitch with yarn in front and wrap the working yarn around it, turn the work.

Repeat rows 19-20 6 more times.

Next row (RS): slip the wrapped stitch, K22, K the wrapped stitch together with the wrap.

Now, you will continue working in the round.

Next round: SM, work 24 stitches in pattern, K the wrapped stitch together with the wrap, K to the end of the round.

Continue working as established until the sock measures 3 cm [1¼”] shorter than the length of your foot, measuring from the back of the heel.

Toe:

Round 1: SM, K24, place marker, K24.

Round 2: * SM, K2togL, K until you have 2 stitches before the marker, K2togR, repeat from * 1 more time.

Repeat round 2 until you have 16 stitches left.

Sew the toe with the kitchener stitch.

Weave in the loose ends.
