knitting pattern


NOTE: there have been changes in the pattern. The raglan lines for larger sizes have been made shorter and the amount of stitches at the underarms have been increased. The chest circumference of the garment stays the same.
Sizes
Chest circumference of the finished garment:
- Size 1 – 95 cm [37½”]
- Size 2 – 105 cm [41¼”]
- Size 3 – 115 cm [45¼]
The sweater is designed to have 10-12 cm [4-5″] of positive ease. Choose the size according to your chest circumference plus the desired ease.
You will need
Yarn: DK (11 wpi). GAZZAL Baby Cotton XL. Approx 1050(1220-1390) m [1140(1335-1520) yds].
Circular knitting needles 4 mm [US 6], 80 cm [32″] and 40 cm [16″] long.
Sewing tapestry needle.
4 stitch markers.
Waste yarn.
Gauge
In Stockinette stitch:
10 cm [4”] = 21 stitches, 28 rows.
Instructions
The instructions are written for the smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus (). Example: size 1(size 2-size 3). If there is only one number given, it applies to all sizes.
Moss stitch:



Abbreviations
BOR – beginning of the round.
K – knit.
K2togL – knit 2 stitches together left leaning.
K2togR – knit 2 stitches together right leaning.
MDS – make a double stitch (for the short rows).
P – purl.
PM – place marker.
RS – right side.
SM – slip the marker.
WS – wrong side.
Collar
With 40 cm [16″] circular needles cast on 88 stitches (+1 stitch to join in round).
Join for working in the round and place BOR marker.
Rounds 1-18: K1, P1.
Fold the collar in half to WS.
{Pick up 1 knit stitch from cast-on, K2tog, K1} repeat to the end of the round.
Yoke
Make a double stitch (MDS):
- RS: slip the first stitch knitwise to the right needle. Pull the yarn up and bring it to the back of the work, making a double stitch;
- WS: slip the first stitch purlwise to the right needle. Pull the yarn up and bring it to the back of the work, making a double stitch.
Turn the work.
Row 1 (WS): MDS, P2, PM, P8, PM, P36, PM, P8, PM, P3, turn the work.
Row 2 (RS): MDS, {K until you have 1 stitch before marker, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L} 4 times, K to the double stitch, K double stitch, K2, turn the work.
Row 3 (WS): MDS, P to the double stitch, P double stitch, P2, turn the work.
Repeat rows 2-3 4 more times.
Next row (RS): MDS, {K until you have 1 stitch before marker, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L} 4 times, {K to the double stitch, K double stitch} 2 times, K until you have 1 stitch before marker.
Then, you will work in the round again:
Round 1: K until you have 1 stitch before BOR marker.
Round 2: {M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K until you have 1 stitch before next marker} 4 times.
Repeat rounds 1-2 until you have 94(102-108) stitches for back and front, and 66(74-80) stitches for the sleeves.
Separate body and sleeves
K1 to BOR marker.
Using the sewing needle, place 66(74-80) stitches of the sleeve on hold onto a waste yarn.
Cast on 6(8-12) stitches.
K 94(102-108) stitches of the back.
Place 66(74-80) stitches of the sleeve on hold onto a waste yarn.
Cast on 6(8-12) stitches and place BOR marker.
200(220-240) stitches on the needles.
Body
Rounds 1-2: K.
Next 24 rounds: work in Moss stitch.
Then, K until the body measures 24 cm [9½”] from the underarms.
Next 14 rounds: K1, P1.
Italian bind off:
Round 1: K1, slip 1 stitch with yarn in front.
Round 2: slip 1 stitch with yarn in back, P1.
Leave the tail approx. 3-4 times longer then the bind off edge, cut the yarn. Thread the tail into a tapestry needle.
1. Insert the tapestry needle into the first knit stitch, from the back to the front, slip that stitch from the main needle, pull the yarn.
2. Insert the tapestry needle into the next purl stitch, from the back to the front, slip that stitch from the main needle, pull the yarn.
3. Insert the tapestry needle into the slipped knit stitch, from the front to the back, and into the next knit stitch, from the back to the front, slip the stitch from the main needle, pull the yarn.
4. Insert the tapestry needle into the slipped purl stitch, from the front to the back, and into the next purl stitch, from the back to the front, slip the stitch from the main needle, pull the yarn.
5. Repeat steps 3-4 to the end of the round.
Sleeves
Place 66(74-80) held stitches of the sleeve onto 40 cm [16″] circular needles.
Pick up 4(5-7) stitches.
Place BOR marker.
Pick up 4(5-7) stitches.
74(84-94) stitches on the needles.
Join the yarn and K to BOR marker.
Next 2 rounds: K.
Next 24 rounds: work in Moss stitch.
Next round (decrease): K1, K2togL, K until you have 3 stitches before marker, K2togR, K1.
Repeat the Decrease round every following 7(5-5)th round, until you have 52(58-66) stitches left.
Then, knit until the sleeve measures 4.5 cm [1¾”] shorter, than the desired length.
Next 14 rounds: K1, P1.
Repeat the Italian bind off the same as for the Body.
Finishing
Weave in the loose ends.
